The invoice didn’t match the expectation.
It was higher. Not wildly. Just enough to raise eyebrows.
“We didn’t add servers,” finance said.
IT didn’t answer right away.
They pulled inventories. Compared lists. Walked the floor.
There were more servers than anyone remembered approving.
Test machines that never went away. Temporary fixes that became permanent. Virtual instances spun up to solve a problem and left running because nothing broke.
Microsoft’s licensing model was evolving fast. More structure. Less flexibility. Fewer gray areas.
The platform had grown up.
The organization hadn’t caught up.
“Do we need all of these?” management asked.
Silence again.
They shut some down. Consolidated others. Documented what stayed.
The renewal still hurt.
But not as much as ignorance would have.
The real cost wasn’t the invoice.
It was realizing how much infrastructure had existed without intent.
