Something happens after hours.
Your phone rings once, then again. The voice on the other end sounds relieved. “We’re back up.”
You don’t congratulate them.
Success on Paper
“The restore completed clean,” they say. “Systems are online. Users logged back in.”
You ask, “Has anyone checked the data?”
A pause. “The logs show success.”
“That’s not what I asked,” you say.
What the Numbers Say
You arrive to quiet offices and glowing monitors. Reports open without complaint. At first glance, everything looks fine.
Then you compare totals.
“Why is this number lower than yesterday?” you ask.
Someone frowns. “It shouldn’t be.”
You scroll. Transactions are missing. Not many. Enough.
Redefining Done
“This is why validation matters,” you say. “Restored doesn’t mean correct.”
No one argues. They’ve seen it now.
You change the rule before anyone can forget it. “From now on, recovery isn’t complete until business owners confirm the data. Speed doesn’t matter if the result can’t be trusted.”
Heads nod. Notes are taken.
The systems stay online. Confidence takes longer to return.
