It Was Working Yesterday

This August was when confidence became the problem.

“It was working yesterday.”

That sentence showed up in every investigation. Something had changed, but no one could say what. Nothing had been installed. No one remembered touching it. The system had simply crossed an invisible line.

That was the month many businesses learned the cost of not knowing their own environment.

Configurations drifted. Quick fixes stacked on top of older ones. Temporary changes became permanent because no one went back.

Everything still worked—until it didn’t.

When a major worm tore through unpatched systems that month, it didn’t introduce new chaos. It exploited existing neglect. Machines that hadn’t been updated in months suddenly couldn’t connect. Networks slowed to a crawl. Work stopped.

The complaint wasn’t about the attack. It was about surprise.

“How did this happen without us knowing?”

The answer was uncomfortable.

Because no one was tracking what changed. No one had a baseline. You couldn’t tell what was different because you didn’t know what normal actually was.

August pushed a simple idea forward.

If you can’t describe your environment on a good day, you can’t fix it on a bad one.

Once systems were documented—versions, configurations, patch levels—problems stopped feeling mysterious. They became solvable.

Confidence returned, but this time it was earned.
