Latest Windows Update Causing System Crashes October 1, 2024

We’re reaching out to alert you to a critical issue with the most recent Windows update that is causing widespread problems for organizations. This update has been reported to break PCs, causing system crashes, performance issues, and in some cases, preventing systems from booting altogether.

After installing this Windows update, KB5043145, users have reported not being able to restart their PC due to experiencing the Blue Screen of Death, the Green Screen of Death, or even BitLocker recovery mode (in which you will need your BitLocker recovery password). This is due to computers getting stuck in a permanent boot loop because Windows automatically launches the Automatic Repair tool in an attempt to repair or reset the update. It also has been reported that users may not be able to use their mice and/or keyboards due to USB connection failures, as well as WLAN connection disappearing.

Given the critical nature of these problems, it’s important to take immediate action to avoid disruption across client environments. Necessary steps to roll back this update are listed below.

QUICK POINTS:

  • Update ID: KB5043145
  • Affected Systems: Windows 11 versions 23H2 and 22H2
  • Issues Reported: System crashes, boot failures, and performance degradation

IMMEDIATE ACTION:

  • Pause updates: Temporarily disable automatic updates to prevent this patch from being installed.
  • Roll back updates: For affected systems, roll back to the previous stable version until Microsoft releases a fix.  Boot in Windows Recovery mode (if unable to boot, restart device and press F11 repeatedly during boot) –> Select “Troubleshoot” –> Choose “Advanced options” –> Select “Uninstall Updates” –> Choose “Uninstall latest quality update” (this should automatically be the KB5043145 update)
