Windows Web Hosts Scrambling to Update ASP.NET Early in 2025

ATTENTION: Support for .NET 6.0 was depreciated on November 12, 2024. .NET and .NET Core official support policy

In the fast-paced world of business on the interwebs, no one wants to go slower. Yet, many Windows web hosts are finding themselves in a race against time to update to the latest ASP.NET 9.0. This new version is not just a minor upgrade; it’s a gamechanger. ASP.NET 9.0 is more compact and up to 50% faster than previous versions – and even faster than current Linux distributions.

The benefits of ASP.NET 9.0 are clear. It offers optimized handling of static files, improved runtime efficiency, and enhanced application responsiveness. These improvements mean faster load times, better performance, and a more seamless user experience. For businesses, this translates to higher search rankings and increased sales.

However, despite these advantages, many major web hosts like GoDaddy, Network Solutions, and Web.com are unfortunately lagging behind. They are still running ASP.NET 6.0, which was depreciated late last year. This outdated framework not only slows down websites but also exposes them to security vulnerabilities

HTTP Error 500.31 – Failed to load

If you publish with the current framework, you’re likely to encounter the dreaded HTTP Error 500.31: Failed to load ASP.NET Core runtime. The current supported lifecycle for ASP.NET shows that version 6.0 will reach its end of support on November 12, 2024. After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide updates, leaving applications vulnerable to security threats. This is a significant concern for businesses relying on these web hosts, as it could lead to potential liability issues.

To avoid these pitfalls, it’s crucial to check your .NET target framework version and urge your web host to upgrade immediately. The risk of not upgrading is too high, with potential losses in search ranking, sales, and security. Don’t let your website fall behind—ensure your web host is running the latest .NET 9.0 to stay competitive and secure.
